If you’re heading to a wine tasting or out to dinner with wine-drinking friends, you should probably know how to hold a wine glass properly.
Here’s a tip: Wine should always be held by the wine glass stem.
Not only is it the proper way to hold a wine glass, it keeps your fingers from adding prints to the glass and elevating the temperature of the wine.
Want to take it a step further and really look like a wine snob? Here are the steps to faking like you really know how to properly taste wine.
- First, you need to master the swirl. When you first get a glass of wine at a party, dinner, or tasting, before you take a sip, take the glass by the stem and give it a gentle swirl around the glass, which lets the wine open up.
- Then sniff it, to see if you can pick up any characteristics.
- Now, it’s time to sip!
- Make a comment about the characteristics of the wine, like you notice the “berry notes” or “citrus notes” or you pick up “a little vanilla.” Since it’s your opinion, no one will refute it. They may comment, “hmm, I don’t pick up on that at as much as blah-di-blah,” but don’t panic – wine is subjective and you can never truly be wrong.
