Blend in with the Wine Snobs
Wine can be a little intimidating – especially if you feel like the wine snobs are judging your technique. If you’re headed to Napa or to a local wine dinner, there are a few things you can do to fit right in with the wine snobs.
1. Always hold a glass of wine by the stem
It takes a little getting used to, but always pick up & hold your wine glass by the stem. It avoids fingerprints and changing the temperature of the wine: plus it looks like you know what you’re doing.
Wine tasters like to swirl their wine to let it open up. There are two ways to do this: 1) grasp the stem of your glass and swirl it while on the table, holding steady or 2) give it a gentle swirl while holding it by the stem in the air. Don’t get too aggressive on this or the wine will splash out of the glass, and that would be tragic.
The fun part. Then you can declare you notice hints of Thyme mingled with blades of grass, and if you say it with confidence, no one will dispute it. Wine is subjective. While you may taste cherries, someone else may taste pepper.
Practice makes perfect! Swirl, sniff, sip… cheers!
